LAKE MASHU
Hokkaido is the northernmost island of the Japanese archipelago, the second largest after Honshu island.
Although it is the northernmost in Japan, it is at almost the same latitude as major American and European cities such as Chicago and Rome.
Surrounded on all four sides by the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Japan, and the Sea of Okhotsk, it boasts majestic and beautiful scenery. Almost the entire area has a subarctic humid climate. There is a large temperature difference between summer and winter, and it is a heavy snow area in winter. It is not affected much by the rainy season or typhoons.
The area, which was called Ezo, and whose indigenous people are the Ainu people, was renamed Hokkaido in 1869. Since then, full-scale development has progressed.

ASAHIYAMA Zoological Park northernmost zoo in Japan
useful information
Asahiyama Zoo, which opened as the northernmost zoo in Japan, does not have any unusual animals. The animals are common in zoos and familiar to Hokkaido. This zoo creates an environment where each animal can demonstrate their unique abilities, behaviors, and sensitivities, and uses a method of exhibiting them called "behavioral exhibits." Instead of the "morphological exhibits" that focus on showing the animals' appearance, which are common in Japanese zoos, this zoo has attracted attention by introducing "behavioral exhibits" that show their behavior and lifestyle. This zoo creates a comfortable and natural environment for the animals, allowing you to see them in a realistic way. Asahiyama Zoo has a track record of breeding animals that live in cold regions, and Polar Bears, Amur Leopards and Scops Owls are some of the first animals in Japan to be successfully bred naturally in captivity.
