Hachimantai is a 1,614m high stratovolcano and the surrounding plateau that straddles Akita and Iwate prefectures.
It is made up of several volcanoes that erupted about 1 million years ago.
Many craters were formed at the summit by steam explosions, and many crater marshes have formed as water accumulates in the craters.
This mountain is known as the easiest of the 100 famous mountains
in Japan, as the hiking trails are well-maintained and there are also sturdy boardwalks.
The basic trekking course takes about an hour and a half round trip from the parking lot at the summit. This area is also one of the most famous hot spring areas in the Tohoku region.
Please note that restrictions on mountain entry may be implemented due
to eruption alerts, so you should check the information in advance. |
